Sheffield United vs Brighton – Premier League LIVE: latest score, teams news and updates as Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United still have hope they can resuurect their Premier Lesgue season starting with trying tiget
Follow Mail Sport’s live blog for all the action, latest score and team news and updates as we cover Sheffield United vs Brighton for the 2pm Sunday Premier League game.
Half-time: Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton
Vinicius Souza and Welbeck fronted up to each other and locked foreheads but no card was given, and moments later the half ended.
A heated end to the first period. Boos ring out around Bramall Lane as Chris Wilder retreats down the tunnel while players in red and white remonstrate with officials.
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton
Sheffield United try end the half with a glimmer of fizz as Bogle clips a ball in to the area but, as one would predict for a strikerless formation, nobody is there.
Larouci and Osborn revive the attack and it eventually leads to a corner, but no goal springs forth.
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton – Lamptey booked
Lamptey chopped McAtee down as he tried to counter down the right flank. No complaints, a textbook yellow.
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton
Whatever wind was in Sheffield United’s sails has well and truly dissipated. Some team talk Chris Wilder is going to have to produce.
Trusty and Van Hecke are warned for some pushing from a Brighton corner. Dunk gets on the end of Gross’ cross and forces Foderingham to tip it on to the bar.
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton – ‘goal’ ruled out!
It wasn’t given in the first place, but Osborn’s ‘goal’ has been ruled out. Vinicius Souza got a touch before Osborn and he was offside when he received it. It did cannon off Buonanotte between their touches but that was not deliberate.
No huge outcry, though, after referee Stuart Attwell analysed events.
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton – Blades goal ruled out?
A rare Blades corner resulted in a scramble in the box, with Osborn turning the ball home.
It was checked for a foul by VAR, but no foul was given.
But they are still interrogating whether scorer Osborn was offside.
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton
Welbeck heads over from a Lamptey cross, a looping and untroublesome header, but he’s been stupendous today. Could have had two or three goals.
A chilling image
This is the tackle that saw Holgate sent off.
Obviously, things do look worse with a still image, but that is barbaric from Holgate. Even if he didn’t intend to hurt, which he probably didn’t, he lost his head there.
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton
Mitoma is running the show here, the conduit through which everything flows. But even their defenders are getting in on the act. Webster has been pushing up and has been a credible creative force.
Brighton have had 75 per cent possession since Holgate’s sending-off. Yeah, this is going to be a long afternoon for any fans in red and white.
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton
You’ve got to fear for Sheffield United here. At this rate, it could turn in to a cricket scoreline. The Brighton onslaught is relentless.
The Blades can’t get near their assailants, who outnumber them and exceed them in quality.
And there’s absolutely no outball for the hosts, so when they clear, the Seagulls just swoop again in a fresh wave of pressure.
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton
A powerful Welbeck header is saved by Foderingham. Shambolic marking from the hosts.
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton – substitution
Trusty is on for Osula, a defender for a striker.
That leaves Sheffield United with no recognised striker, by my understanding. A 5-4-0 formation.
WATCH: Buonanotte and Welbeck give Brighton quickfire 2-0 lead
Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton
Mitoma on the ball is like a knife carving through hot butter. The Blades defenders are defenceless against him.
Brighton almost have a third after he trickles in to the box and causes a goal-line scramble, but Sheffield United’s nose is, mercifully, not bloodied further.
Goal! Sheffield United 0-2 Brighton – Welbeck!
Danny Welbeck makes it 2-0!
Far too easy for Brighton. Mitoma ghosts on to a ball in to the box at the back post and slides a shot at Foderingham, who paws it away.
But he paws it in to the path of Welbeck, who slams it in to double Brighton’s lead. A walk in the park so far.
WATCH: Mason Holgate sent off for rash foul on Mitoma
Sheffield United 0-1 Brighton
Almost an instant response from Sheffield United as Hamer weaves his way past challenges to slalom through the box and shoots wide!
He should have done better at the end but what a balletic, beautiful dribble from Hamer. Hope for the Blades.
What a mess for Sheffield United. The cross comes in from the corner and Dunk rises at the back post to head it back in to the area.
Buonanotte reacts the fastest and bundles it home.
Sheffield United 0-0 Brighton
Brighton are in control here.
Lamptey, Mitoma, Gross, and Adingra have been some of the major creative threats so far.
A cross in from Dunk is delicious and right in the centre of the six-yard box, but somehow Welbeck and Buonanotte don’t get on the end of it!
Sheffield United 0-0 Brighton
Wes Foderingham received some attention from physios there as he looked like he had sprained his ankle.
He carries on but Brighton could seek to pray on that. Any weakness in a goalkeeper is a huge advantage – as it being a man up with most of the game to go!
Sheffield United 0-0 Brighton – Mason Holgate sent off!
A wild slide tackle from Holgate on Mitoma see him sent off! The original yellow was upgraded to red after a VAR check.
Chris Wilder doesn’t even look at his January loan signing as he stalks off. A rash, dangerous foul, way too high.
Sheffield United 0-0 Brighton – Holgate booked
Mason Holgate has been booked for a foul on Mitoma but VAR is looking at it. That looked nasty.
Sheffield United 0-0 Brighton
Brighton look like they’re causing a few problems here.
Webster didn’t look overly alert when a ball came in for Gross and he broke from midfield.
Chris Wilder’s men are going to have to track the runners and be a step ahead.
Sheffield United 0-0 Brighton
Good save from Foderingham! Adingra swung a low ball in to the box and Ahmedhodzic got to it before Welbeck, but he almost deflected it in to his own goal!
Quick reaction from Foderingham to turn it away. Had to be acrobatic.
Sheffield United 0-0 Brighton
Handball from Danny Welbeck after a throw-in for Brighton. A silly way to give away possession.
It’s been a low-key start to the game, both sides having some time on the ball.
Sheffield United 0-0 Brighton
Lamptey and Mitoma linked up well down the left side for Brighton, before Mitoma threaded a ball in to the box.
Welbeck tried to get on the end of it but it was well-defended by Ahmedhodzic.
Out for a corner, which the Blades defend.
Sheffield United 0-0 Brighton
Bogle drives a low shot across goal from inside the box and forces a save from Verbruggen.
He was given space by the defenders there. Good save from Brighton’s goalkeeper.
Kick-off!
We’re underway at Bramall Lane!
Brighton get us going but don’t hang on to it for long, and it’s out for a Sheffield United goal kick.
A record change for Brighton!
Verbruggen’s appearance in goal today sets a new Premier League record.
It’s the 15th change between the sticks for Brighton this campaign – a record for the league.
The players are out!
The players have emerged from the tunnel in front of a packed-out Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United pulled off a huge result last week, but they’re going to need a few more. Can they do it again today?
Worrying defensive stat for Sheffield United
The Blades have shipped 60 goals this season. Nobody has conceded more at this stage of a Premier League campaign. Damning.
Get to your seats!
A young fan is draped in an epic-looking flag there, so big it’s almost covering them from head to toe, but they haven’t got long to get to their seat!
If you go in disguised as a flag, do you get in for free?
Roberto De Zerbi avoiding blame for poor form?
Roberto De Zerbi appeared to deflect responsibility for Brighton’s poor results when speaking with Sky Sports.
He said: ‘Today is a very tough game. They won 3-1 in Luton and we have to fight in the right way if we want to win.
‘We are winning not so many games but we are playing very well. I can manage the performance, the level of performance, but not the result. The result depends on a lot.
‘The coach can work, improve, analyse the style, teh quality of the play, the mentality – not the result.’
Blades could use this man!
Derek Dooley knew a thing or two about goals.
There’s a statue of him outside Bramall Lane, outside the club where he has once director and chairman.
He also played up front for rivals Sheffield Wednesday and scored 63 goals in 63 games for them!
WIll Osula awaits first Premier League goal
He;s been free-scoring in the FA Cup, bagging three goals in two games, but Will Osula has failed to score in any of his previous 12 Premier League outings.
The Dane is only 20 and can take inspiration from fellow countryman Rasmus Hojlund, who has recently found his scoring boots for Manchester United.
He leads the line for the Blades today. Can he make a difference?
Danny Welbeck gives his thoughts ahead of the game
Danny Welbeck claims that Brighton put in a good performance against Spurs before ultimately losing last time out – and that that’s happened ‘a few times’ this season.
Do you agree? Are Brighton deserving of more points? Or does their pretty football paper over the cracks?
Less than half an hour to go
Not long now, folks. Stay with us for all the updates.
Sheffield United hit the grass
Bravo, Adingra!
I’m not sure how much of AFCON you watched, but if you didn’t catch much, I recommend cobbling together a time machine and going back to watch as much of it as you can.
What a story for Ivory Coast. They only just scraped through their group and scrapped their manager, but went on to win the whole thing, with Sebastien Haller scoring the winning goal in the final after recovering from testicular cancer.
Brighton’s buzzing firefly on the wing, Simon Adingra, was a big part of that.He got two assists against Nigeria in the final, won man of the match for the final, and was named young player of the tournament. Way to go.
Chris Wilder: Cameron Archer failed a fitness test
Chris Wilder confirmed that Cameron Archer has been excluded due to failing a fitness test – and gave his thoughts on Brighton.
He told Sky Sports: ‘It feels like we get one back and then lose one, the story of the season. Disappointed for Cam because he was outstanding last week and got his goal.
‘He failed his fitness test yesterday.
‘We know we’re up against an outstanding football team. We have to make sure that we’re a smart team today, aggressive, get the defensive part of the game right, but make sure we’re a threat going forward.
‘They want you to go and press and then pick you off. So you have to be patient. But when you go and press, you have to press with aggression, you have to commit to that press.’
Will Chris Wilder save Sheffield United this season?
It’s hard to work out whether the Wilder boost has been enough at Bramall Lane.
Since returning as head honcho for the Blades, Wilder has managed three wins in 12 games and has lost seven of those.
Will he keep them up? He’s done it before, but oversaw a disastrous majority of a season when they last went down.
Fans surprised by Foderingham starting over Grbic
It looked as if Grbic was brought in to supplant Foderingham between the sticks for the Blades, but once again he starts, and fans are surprised.
Grbic has only made one outing since joining from Atletico Madrid and looked flappable in a 3-2 defeat against Crystal Palace.
Adam Lallana speaks out on Liverpool’s next boss
Adam Lallana has given his blessing to ‘one of the best coaches in the world’ to succeed Jurgen Klopp at his former club, Liverpool.
An honest take from the midfielder, who is still going strong at 35 for the Seagulls.
Cheerio!
The fans are turning up in their droves for this one. An optimistic fist-pump from the fella there in the first photo.
Less than an hour until kick-off.
Brighton release their line-up – three changes
Three changes from Roberto De Zerbi.
Verbruggen gets the nod in the latest twist of Brighton’s eternal goalkeeping battle between him and Steele.
Adingra, fresh from winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast, is in, as is Webster. Estupinan and Lallana drop out.
Verbrugge, Webster and Adingra come in for Steele, Estupiñán and Lallana.
Sheffield United release their line-up – two changes
Chris Wilder has made a couple of tinkers to his starting XI for this one.
Osula comes in up top as a replacement for Archer while Larouci takes the spot of Norrington-Davies.
Vini Souza turns up… and is hoping for another goal?
Vini Souza admits his mum could be rather harsh as they waited for his first Premier League goal. Safe to say he made her smile with his first last week against Luton!
Pitch looking decent?
Brighton players and staff have been out inspecting the turf.
I do wonder what goes on in these checks, and at what point they’d go: ‘Nah, we’re not playing on this.’
Grounds staff work tirelessly through the week to get Premier League pitches in pristine condition. You’re not going to find mole hills, lads.

Plenty of time for young fans here in this video. Good to see.
Bring out the birthday balloons!
Former Sheffield United man Keith Gillespie turns 49 today.
Gillespie ran the wing for the Blades between 2005 and 2009, helping the club win promotion to the Premier League.
He’s got an interesting story in recent years. Gillespie plays for FC Mindwell, a Northern Irish club set up to raise awareness around mental health issues.
He came out of retirement in 2020 to join and they ply their trade in the unstintingly glamorous Mid-Ulster Football League.
Do share your memories of Gillespie in the comments section!
A relaxed approach to doubts over De Zerbi
One Brighton fan account is taking a blase stance on speculation about Roberto De Zerbi’s future.
If there’s one thing Brighton are good about, it’s regeneration. There was some uproar when Chris Hughton left – could they switch to a more expansive style under Graham Potter? They did.
And when Potter left, they got even better under De Zerbi. Tony Bloom’s club is, by all visible accounts, a well-run one, and you feel they’re not beholden to any ephemeral face in the dugout.
Sheffield United officially out of the Premier League title race
Bad news, Blades fans. You’re not doing a Leicester this season.
One account has helpfully pointed out that Sheffield United are now mathematically out of the Premier League title race, presumably leaving them to focus on the Champions League footrace… or avoiding relegation?
After yesterday’s results, they’re 44 points behind Liverpool with 14 games to go, meaning they can only pick up 42 more points. Maybe next season.
De Zerbi’s future a cloud hanging over Brighton?
If there’s one thing footballers need, it’s a distraction-free environment to go about their business.
It won’t help that their highly vaunted coach, Roberto De Zerbi, is being linked with every man and his dog.
Liverpool, Manchester United, and Barcelona are all being talked about as potential next destinations for the Italian coach, and the Seagulls are drawing up contingency plans in case he flies the nest.
Could he make the step up to a bigger club?
Sheffield United arrive
It’s helpful of the Blades to arrive at their own stadium. Otherwise, we’d have a very one-sided game of football!
Shots are starting to come in of them arriving. Stay with us for all the updates.
Brighton arrive
A quick internet search is telling me that it’s 222.2 miles from the Amex to Bramall Lane – presumably a distance painstakingly measured by yardstick by a hapless Google employee – so the Seagulls have come a long way to be here?
Will they be flying off with all three points, or is an afternoon of disappointment in store?
Home comforts for the Blades?
Sheffield United have won three games in the Premier League this season – not the most inspiring record.
Fortunately, two of those have come at Bramall Lane: a 2-1 win over Wolves and a 1-0 victory against Brentford.
They are winless in three at home but will hope to catch a shaky Brighton by surprise up in Yorkshire.
Last time out
It was hat-trick heaven for Joao Pedro when these two met in January.
In a dramatic FA Cup encounter, Sheffield United went 2-0 down, levelled the scores before half-time, and threw it all away again in the second half as Brighton ran riot.
You can remind yourself of all the action below.
Good afternoon
Hello and welcome to Mail Sport’s live coverage of Sheffield United vs Brighton in the Premier League.
Sheffield United took a big step forward in their bid for survival last week with a 3-1 win at Luton but are still seven points deep in the drop zone.
Meanwhile, Brighton have been heavily unpredictable of late – losing 4-0 to Luton themselves in January – and come in to this on the back of a 2-1 loss at Tottenham.
