Kane Cornes vs Matthew Richardson: Nine and Seven stars get into war of words over the Footy Show as AFL greats clash over ‘p**s take’ that ‘went too far’

Date:

  • Tigers great Trent Cotchin’s TV commentary slammed
  • Kane Cornes showed no mercy in a savage takedown
  • He was then slammed by Matthew Richardson

What was intended to be a light-hearted sledge has earned Kane Cornes a fierce rebuke from AFL great Matthew Richardson, who slammed the media personality for mocking Richmond champion Trent Cotchin’s commentary skills.

Cornes played 300 games for Port Adelaide and won a flag in 2004, but is now more well known for his cutting takes as a radio broadcaster and co-host of Channel Nine’s The Sunday Footy Show.

He has regularly courted controversy and has been taken to task again for mocking what he sees as Cotchin’s wooden delivery in his new role as an AFL analyst.

Cotchin now works for Channel Seven and is on a learning curve in front of the camera – which was obvious during a segment posted to the network’s TikTok channel.

Cornes not only mocked Cotchin's appearance and delivery, but also the production value of the footage that regularly saw the Richmond champion's arm cropped out of the shot

But Cornes showed the media rookie no respect in a segment on Nine on Sunday, poking fun at Cotchin’s appearance and the production values of the segment in a cutting display.

‘Hi guys, Kane Cornes here, I just wanted to show you what isn’t working for Hawthorn at the moment,’ Cornes said in a monotone voice intended to mimic Cotchin’s piece.

‘So let’s take a look at the vision. In this example you can see James Sicily with the football and he kicks it to his teammate and he marks it. His teammate doesn’t quite know what to do so he decides to kick it to his teammate, who marks it as well.

‘His teammate then kicks the ball and his teammate marks it and they play on and then he kicks it and there’s another mark. And then Hawthorn kick it back and then there’s another mark,’ Cornes continued.

‘So as you can see there, it’s groundbreaking vision. For more of this analysis, stay tuned next week.’

While Cornes, his colleagues and plenty of viewers found the stitch-up hilarious, former Richmond star Richardson was not amused.

He slammed Cornes for the parody and also pointed to the fact the media personality had taken aim at Geelong champion turned Channel Seven analyst Joel Selwood.

‘Taking the piss out of 2 AFL premiership captains. Bar getting lower and lower,’ Richardson posted on social media.

But Cornes was not backing down on his SEN Breakfast radio show when confronted with Richardson’s comment.

‘We have fun on the Sunday Football Show. We take the mickey out of ourselves more than we take the mickey out of anyone else. I think Richo’s being a little bit sensitive there,’ he said.

‘If you watch the Front Bar on Channel Seven, their whole show is taking the mickey out of people.

‘So I was hoping it would be taken in the right way and 98 per cent of people I think thought it was OK.’

Cornes said he would be ‘fine’ if Cotchin has a crack at him.

‘Surely we are big enough to be able to accept a bit of light-hearted fun,’ he said.

‘So Richo, lighten up.’
